The Liquids of Life

Water is a body's life fluid. Even your brain is eighty-five per cent water.  The level of water in your body must be maintained regardless of your activity or external conditions.

Most people take in about three litres of water a day.  It's used and lost in many ways, especially by our perspiring as we move and work.  Our mouths produce about a litre of saliva each day.  The two hundred and fifty thousand sweat glands in our feet give off almost a cup of moisture every day.

We have between five and six litres of blood in our bodies.  Every day our heart pumps over thirty thousand litres of blood as it constantly circulates it through the body.  The kidneys constantly maintain our water balance by responding sensitively to everything that could affect it, even including the weather.  Every day they filter over 200 litres of liquid, through a million tiny tubes called nephrons.

The structure of these fine tubes provides a large surface for a multitude of chemical reactions and fluid exchanges to occur.  The blood and all the important substances it carries is constantly filtered through these tiny tubes.  They throw out the bad, and recycle the good.  Once all the impurities are removed, they return the fluid to the blood again.

So next time you swig a glass of water, remember you're starting it on an incredible journey, every step of which is designed to keep you healthy.

MOVING BEYOND MATTER
by Christopher Shennan

Our kidneys are indeed marvelous organs, filtering out impurities and recycling the beneficial elements in our blood.  The very nature of life and the environments we live in, necessitate such a filtering system.

What is true for our physical bodies is surely true for our intellectual and emotional life as well.  With radio, television, and the internet, we are constantly being bombarded with conflicting ideas and, well let's just call it -  propaganda.  Such an overwhelming influx of ideas, opinions, and personal convictions, can be confusing.  We could find ourselves in a state of uncertainty, unable to decide what is right and what is wrong in any given situation.

Such a state is exceedingly dangerous.  Any charismatic and persuasive leader with a hidden agenda could persuade us to support any cause he or she chooses to adopt.  Several well known leaders, who fit the adjective "diabolical", illustrate the point.  The masses can be swayed, without any reference to good sense and sound reasoning.

What we need is a set of absolutes that, like our kidneys, can filter out unhealthy thinking and deceptive arguments.  Every one of us have to be sure of some things, or we will be the target of unscrupulous people intent on using us for their own ends.

Do you have a set of values that you are sure about?  Propositions which take you beyond the idea that one philosophical  framework is as good as another?

Most people tend to choose the absolutes most convenient to the lifestyle they have chosen.  "As long as it makes me feel good," seems to be the rule by which they measure the standards by which they live.

Having a clear sense of a few philosophical propositions we can identify as "true" allows us to get on with the simple decisions and tasks of everyday life.  Without them, we'd be paralysed by a smorgasbord of options which are all equally appealing or, perhaps, equally distasteful.  God governs Himself by the absolute qualities of His character.  That's why we can count on Him to provide the guidance we need to sort out what's truly worth keeping from what is worthless or harmful.
