Jules Verne wrote about the submarine in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, long before scientists had even imagined that such a craft were possible. Centuries before, Leonardo da Vinci made models of a crude "flying machine" as well as a "parachute." Today, the writers of the Star Trek series, have dreamed up a number of imaginative ideas, including holograms and "beaming up." Who says that these "way-out" imaginings may not become reality in the future. The question is, "Will all these fantastic creations, were they to emerge, make a difference in the world with respect to world peace? Or will these inventions merely make us more efficient in our capacity to make war and cause mayhem?" It seems that the advances most needed are not in the realm technology. What would benefit humanity most would be something that would bring about a change in human nature. Looking at the world scene, in almost any age, it would be impossible to deny that technology has failed to change the inbuilt capacity of hatred and killing that resides in the human spirit. Sure, there is a lot of nobility there, too. But the daily newspaper continues to spew out evidence of the meanness that resides there. How would you go about changing human nature, so that war and hatred
will cease?
