It is an interesting study to compare the feet of different animals. Take the number of toes or digits on a foot, for example. We have five digits as do other animals like elephants. Pigs only have four digits. A rhinoceros has three, a camel two, and a horse has just one digit. So different and yet all fulfilling the same tasks of providing movement and maintaining balance, and each suited to their respective environments. Feet are not only good at their intended purposes. There are people who've trained their feet to be their hands. We have at home a calendar of pictures painted by foot and mouth artists –– artists who either never had or have lost the use of their hands and have adapted. Feet may be best suited for walking and standing, but when needed they can go beyond their primary function. Why are our feet the way they are?
