Moving Beyond Matter with Christopher Shennan

Lie detecting may seem an area of expertise important only in police work, or international politics.  But lies are not confined to the criminal mind.  Neither do they have an impact on the underworld alone.  Lies are found in boardrooms of big business corporations, and in the private lives of the average citizen.

Whether we are making investments on the stock market, being lured into a crooked deal, or are intent on developing a romantic relationship, we are often at the mercy of those skilled in deception.  We can't even believe everything we hear or see on radio and television.  Our survival often depends upon whether or not we can tell when we are being lied to, or not.  Without becoming suspicious, cynical, and untrusting of anybody and everybody, we need to know when the "wool" is being pulled over our eyes.  We need to know when we are being taken advantage of.

Developing lie-detecting skills is like walking a tightrope.  We want to avoid being taken in, without becoming hard and cynical.  We can't subject everyone to a polygraph test, neither can we treat everyone as a liar until proven otherwise.

What strategy do you employ to detect the lies that come to us on a daily basis?
