The black hole in our galaxy may be hard to find, but those in human nature are only too evident. The difficulty is not in finding these moral black holes, but in avoiding their detrimental effect upon our lives.
There are several "black holes" our society is presently facing: 1. Political Corruption - No doubt, there are many elected officials in the government who hold fast to their integrity. There is, however, sufficient cause for alarm when reports of conflict of interest and other corruption allegations surface in the press. 2. Domestic Violence - The increase in the number of shelters of victims of domestic abuse is testimony enough to the seriousness of this problem in our society. 3. Dishonesty in Big Business - Recent reports of big companies rendering false financial reports has resulted in proposed tough legislation. Peter Elgen, founder and chairman of Transparency International, says: "Despite the societal harm it causes, corruption is a taboo subject and a tolerated evil. And neither government nor business alone can effectively combat corruption. Governmental measures alone fail because laws are not obeyed, penal systems have inadequate resources or policy itself is directly influenced by corruption. Upstanding corporations competing with corrupt ones find themselves compelled to pay bribes just to survive. They must often conform to general business practices."* If we fail to deal with these and other "black holes," could they
not someday swallow us up? * source
