He started giving them the following mini-lecture: "You don't have a bad memory. If you can't remember things, it is probably because you have an untrained memory. You haven't trained your memory to function properly. You haven't given it exercise. Or you have directed it into a few channels, and it doesn't know how to work well in others. You remember when you have a date, don't you? You remember the things that are important to you, don't you? Don't say you have a bad memory. Work at improving it in those areas that are most necessary to your daily life and you won't have to complain about a bad memory." That's not the kind of speech to make a man popular. Scientifically,
though, he may be right. Apart from people with Alzheimer's disease, and
other abnormal conditions, we may just need to use our memories more to get them
to work more efficiently.
