Moving Beyond Matter with Christopher Shennan

There are so many things with both good and bad characteristics, it takes the wisdom of Solomon to know the best way to deal with them. Coffee is good, but wrongly used can be harmful. It is all a matter of making informed choices.

The story is told of a farmer who hired a farm-hand. The young man proved to be a real treasure. He worked like a dynamo. Any task given him was accomplished in half the time or less than could be reasonably expected. The farmer was delighted, but after a while he began to feel a little guilty. He couldn't afford to pay much more, but he was concerned the young man would suffer from overwork.

Hitting on a solution, he called the young man into the barn and pointed to a mountain of potatoes.

The farmer said, "I want you to sort those potatoes for me. Now take your time. I only want you to sort a few boxes in the next two hours. Put the bad ones in that corner, the barely acceptable ones over there, the good ones in that barrel, and the very good ones in this grade A box over here."

The young man nodded and the farmer left him.

Returning two hours later the farmer was shocked to find the worker passed out beside the stool where he had been sitting. Only a small amount if potatoes had been sorted.

Alarmed, he woke the man, "What's the matter? Are you sick? Why did you pass out?"

Still dazed, the worker shook his head, "Work I don't mind. But I can't take having to make all these decisions."

Making the right decisions are not always easy, but the need to make them is inescapable. The whole of life is made up of choices.
